Living Christmas Cards

Client: Swedish Mail
Agency: Åkestam Holst

This year the agency Åkestam Holst and the Swedish mail services (Posten) launched a Christmas project aiming to inspire the public to send more real Christmas cards via mail. The goal was to invent a simple service where the Swedish people could take their own unique photos from one of four live cameras, and with a few clicks have them delivered as real Christmas cards to the homes friends and family. Easy, fun and quick. The production however, was conducted as one of the most remote places on the planet. Perfect for us.

SOLUTION

Launching a four camera HD live stream experience on a Swedish mountain top without internet, housing or even electricity, is the kind of challenge we love to take on. Add minus 30 degrees centigrade and reindeers for a cast and you have a deal. So where to begin? We started with connecting with the original Swedish inhabitants in the region (Same), and suddenly we we’re equipped with both reindeers, snow vessels and a helicopter. Once that was settled, we flew in the barracks in which the team could set up the front end dev department and the snow vessels brought the main cast (ten reindeers) as well as dragging up the internet cables connected to the nearest hub with the capacity to deliver HD streaming.

We rigged four camera houses, fully equipped with heat and lens fans to secure full functionality in the harshest of weather conditions. The agency CD even picked one of the camera positions himself from the top of a fir tree. The cameras were of course framed to deliver the most picturesque view possible hitting the sun set or close shot of the reindeer feeding area with the mountains in the background.
